Over the past few years, Velesto Energy Berhad (VEB) (formerly known as UMW Oil & Gas Corporation Berhad), has been committed in providing assistance in education based CSR programmes for Malaysian rural school children.

At a recent ‘SMART’s COOL’CSR programme, Velesto’s scope expanded to include a hands on experience in learning. Held in collaboration with the Selangor State Education Department, and the Science Bridge Academy, Velesto Energy brought the wonders of learning science to the classroom. Comprising of hand picked participants from 10 selected schools in the Kuala Langat district, the pupils saw a whole new perspective of science in a specially tailored session which also included locating and drilling for oil!

The hands on session also witnessed more than 20 Velesto personnel and SL1M trainees interacting with the children, acting as mentors and guiding the participants in assembling a mini DIY solar car. Earlier in the day, the participants also attended a UPSR workshop for mathematics under the tutelage of Hj. Zulkifli Mahfudz, a renowned mathematics specialist in the education circle.

Representing the Selangor State Education Department were, En. Azman Shariff, Deputy Director, Academic Management, and also the host school’s headmistress, Pn. Siti Hanim Sungit, of SK Bandar Banting.

Whereas in attendance from Velesto Energy Berhad were, Tn. Syed Rozhan Syed Hassan, Head, Human Resources, VEB, Pn. Maryam Salwaana Kamal, Head, Corporate Communications Division, VEB, and representatives from both divisions.
